A 12-year-old skating prodigy from Tweed Heads is in the international spotlight, taking silver for Australia in the women’s finals of the World Championships in Dubai.
Chloe Covell, daughter of former NRL player Luke Covell, has emerged as one of Australia’s best skateboarding talents on a worldwide qualification journey that could lead her to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
She narrowly missed out on gold in a closely fought World Championships final, finishing second behind Olympic silver medallist Rayssa Leal and ahead of Japan’s Olympic champion Momiji Nishiya.
Already boasting a bronze medal at the X-Games and a silver medal at the Street League Skateboardingon debut, Covell also has 46,000 Instagram followers and is sponsored by Nike.
She was on Sunday night preparing to compete in the grand final, having successfully made it through the semi-finals at the weekend.
Covell told The Courier-Mail watching fellow Aussie skater Keegan Palmer take gold at the Tokyo Olympics had inspired her.
“I remember being picked up early form school and I came home to watch (the Tokyo Games) with my nan and my dad,” she said.
“Seeing the tricks they were doing and how they progressed was so exciting.”
Queensland Academy of Sport CEO Chelsea Warr described Covell is a wonderful example of what was to come ahead of the Brisbane Olympics, and the outstanding young sporting talent in Queensland.
“Through the support of her family, Skate Australia and the Queensland Academy of Sport she is taking on the world and inspiring us all,” Ms Warr said.
Covell has been skating since she was six-years-old, having taken it up after watching American skateboarder Nyjah Huston at the X Games.
“It just clicked in me. As soon as I saw him skating that’s what I wanted to do,” she said.
