They may look like enemies on camera, but the Prime Minister has revealed the truth behind his relationship with Opposition Leader Peter Dutton.
Speaking on Nova 106.9’s Ash, Luttsy and Nikki Osborne show on Tuesday morning, just days before Australia heads to the polls, Anthony Albanese said he “talks all the time” with the Coalition leader.
“We talk all the time … We text, we chat, sometimes I will say, ‘Are you available to call me?’ if things are happening, it’s important,” he told Nova 106.9.
“Some things are about the national interest, security issues, so we will chat about that … He’ll come around to the office.
“Me and my predecessor, Scott Morrison – I went into his office in Parliament House on the first day parliament got sworn in, and that was the last time I went inside his office. Never got an invite, so that is life.
“I have a different view, which is that courtesy costs you nothing, good manners cost you nothing, so I will often tell (Dutton) things that I don’t necessarily have to.
“But I think it is the right thing to do, and you know we try to get as much coming together as possible.”
Mr Albanese explained that while both parties had very different ideas and policies, he “didn’t take it personally”.
“We have very different views on this election, you know, 20 per cent off student debt under us, more debt for students under them,” he explained.
“Tax cuts under us, tax increases under them. More money for housing under us, less under them and cuts. We want renewables backed by gas, batteries, and hydro and they want nuclear.
“So I don’t know how they are going to pay for the $600bn, and that is the problem.
“There is a real choice this election between the two sides, but we will respect whatever the Australian people decide.”
But of course, Mr Albanese couldn’t jump off the radio segment without being asked the hard-hitting questions: Is Liam or Chris Hemsworth hotter?
In a minute of rapid-fire questions thrown at him by Osborne, Mr Albanese dodged the question, declaring, “I am not going to out myself on Nova FM”.
“I am going to take that as both,” Osborne laughed.
