New Portarlington coach Warren Finlayson says it is hard for the club to hide from its past results, but he is hoping he can change the script for the Demons.
The Demons have already announced two new signings in Jake Alderding and Zac Kos for 2023, and the club is expected to secure a more players in the near future.
Finlayson said there were challenges in recruiting players to Portarlington.
“We’re putting forward our message of what our vision of what we’re trying to achieve,” he said.
“We can’t hide away from the results of the past couple of years, but with a new coach, new direction and a real push for development we’re hoping we can get some players in who see that journey.
“Seeing the footy club come out of the ashes from where it has been over the past couple of years is really important, we don’t want to be the stragglers and the easybeats.
“We want to have some progress, and that’s what we sell moving forward.”
Alderding will provide some experience in the Demons’ back half after moving from Thomson, while Kos will slot onto a wing after spending time developing with Leopold.
“Zac will provide us some really great run on the outside, his ability to run both ways is really strong,” he said.
“Ed Langdon in the AFL does it the best, and we’re hoping Zac can have a similar impact for us.
“At the moment that’s the role he’ll slot into, but it’s going to be a new start for everyone and we’ll decide in pre-season what works best for the team.
“Jake is a player with plenty of success on his resume at Thomson, he’ll really sure up our defensive structure and give us some leadership there.
“Good teams start with a good defensive structure, and he’ll help us there.”
