OH come all ye faithful, and they did.

Christmas In The Park saw more than 5000 shepherds flock to Victoria Park, South Townsville for 4 hours of Christian harmonies, dancing and live entertainment spread across three stages.

Jono Pearson from Pop Up Food Trucks (PUFT) and his team acted as Christmas angels to deliver the iconic event after the region’s holiday spirit lost its sparkle when Townsville City Council decided to cancel its annual Carols by Candlelight at Riverway.

“Everyone just wanted to celebrate Christmas and we tried to create something that we’d want our own family to enjoy,” Mr Pearson said.

“The community got right behind it and we’re stoked that we could provide that Christmas joy and a stage for community groups to perform.

“More than 60 businesses benefited from the event and we’re just so happy we got to do it for them.”

Getting right into the festive cheer, Melanie Williams and her family travelled from Saunders Beach, north of Townsville to lay down their picnic rug and settle in for an evening of carols as the sunset on Castle Hill in the background.

“My family all went together and we wore our Christmas outfits,” Ms Williams said.

“I’m really happy that they did it because we were a bit upset when we heard the council wasn’t doing theirs.

“My girls were up and the rides were lots of fun, it was awesome to see them having a good time and so nice to be able to walk around the markets.”

Townsville City Council’s virtual carols – hosted by Pricey and including a prerecorded performance by the 1RAR Band – launched on the council’s website yesterday at 6.30pm, and were also streamed on Triple M last night.
