As darkness fell around the seaside town of Tathra on the NSW south coast, up to 35 homes had been lost in the area and the roads into and out of the town were closed. A historic pub was damaged in the out of control bushfire, which leapt across the Bega River. Hundreds of local residents were sheltering in a makeshift evacuation centre at the Bega Showground following the sudden fire, which was reported to have destroyed Tathra Primary School.
