A distraught dog owner is desperately searching for her beloved pet who went missing on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry.
Holly Alexander’s pet dog, a doberman and rottweiler cross named Ester, vanished over Bass Strait during a sail from Devonport to Melbourne on Monday night.
Ms Alexander said she was woken at midnight by a security guard telling her Ester had escaped.
But she said the crew only let her look for an hour before she was forced to wait at the bar while they continued looking.
She said the crew believed Ester could have jumped in someone’s car, but they didn’t make any announcements or check any vehicles as they disembarked at 6am on Tuesday.
“I’m hoping someone has found her and that she is in the pound,” Ms Alexander said.
“We were moving from Tasmania to Tweed Heads and she is my best friend and I just want her back.
“Not knowing if she’s dead or alive is killing me.”
Ms Alexander said she checked Ester’s kennel on the Spirit of Tasmania to make sure the door was shut.
She said she stayed until midday on Tuesday trying to find her pet, but Ester remained missing.
The ship has since left Melbourne to return to Devonport.
Ms Alexander has appealed for any passengers on the ferry on Monday or Tuesday to check their vehicles to see if Ester was hiding there, and if they find her to check her into a pound so she can get her dog back.
TT-Line, the company that operates the Spirit of Tasmania, said they were working closely with the Ms Alexander and supporting her efforts to locate Ester.
“Despite a thorough search of the vessel, Ester has not been found suggesting that she may have left the vessel inside another passenger’s vehicle or trailer,” they said.
