Paul Kelly to headline Red Hot Summer Tour with new How To Make Gravy ‘sequel’

He’s written 30 albums and had a career spanning four decades, but there’s one song the Aussie icon admits made him nervous – and he’s bringing it to Broadwater Parklands.

One of the country’s most enduring singer-songwriters Paul Kelly is set to headline next year’s Red Hot Summer Tour, bringing his four-decade musical legacy back to the Gold Coast.

The 70-year-old icon, whose 30-album catalogue includes cultural touchstones like To Her Doorand the Christmas classic How to Make Gravy, said he’s excited to return to Broadwater Parklands next February after previously touring with the festival in 2023.

“It’s a really cool festival,” he told The Bulletin.

“If you come along, you won’t get bored – it’s got a great variety (of acts).

“I’m friends with all the bands playing, so I’m looking forward to having a good time.”

With hundreds of songs to choose from in his discography, Kelly said he’s “got a bit of work to do” to whittle it down to a festival-length set list.

“It’s fun to do,” he said.

“We’ll be playing all the well-known ones but we’ve always got the new ones – we’ll mix it up.”

But Kelly said his latest single ‘Rita Wrote a Letter’ – which he describes as a “black comedy sequel” to ‘How To Make Gravy’ from nearly 30 years ago, would definitely make the cut.

“I was really pleasantly surprised by the reaction because I was a little bit nervous about it,” he said.

Kelly said he wrote the follow-up from Rita’s point of view “because she didn’t get enough of a mention in the first song”.

The all-Australian line-up also features Missy Higgins, The Cruel Sea, The Cat Empire, Kasey Chambers, and Jess Hitchcock.
