Who is steering Labor’s morally dubious foreign policy?

Is our foreign policy crafted by experienced politicians and diplomats, or by inexperienced individuals from academia? James Morrow analyses Labor’s Gaza stance as part of the moral bankruptcy of the Albanese-Wong foreign policy.

Who is running Labor’s foreign policy?

Is it professional seasoned politicians and diplomats, or a group of randoms scooped up off the lawn of the University of Sydney?

It’s a fair question given the statement issued by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Gaza on Friday afternoon.

Apparently the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which began when Hamas launched its October 7 attacks is entirely the fault of … Israel.

Not Hamas, which deliberately murdered more than 1000 Israeli civilians on October 7 and gleefully participated in the beating of hostages who were brought back as trophies on the backs of utes and held them in the most degrading conditions.

No, according to Labor the sole problem is Israel: “Gaza is in the grip of a humanitarian catastrophe. Israel’s denial of aid and the killing of civilians, including children, seeking access to water and food cannot be defended or ignored,” the government statement said.

“We call on Israel to comply immediately with its obligations under international law.”

Labor also asked for Hamas to release the remaining hostages, but we know what Albo’s real focus is here.

This is part of the moral bankruptcy of the Albanese-Wong foreign policy.

Donald Trump’s tariffs are not the action of a friend. But China’s circumnavigation of Australia with spy ships is defensible because, well, it falls technically within international law and therefore to criticise it would be to undermine the global rule of law. As if.

The one silver lining is that Albanese did not call for a full recognition of Palestine, following in the footsteps of France earlier today.

But is there any doubt that this is next?

Peace in the Middle East will only be achieved when everyone is ready to put down their arms. Labor should direct its anger to the aggressors – the terror group running the Gaza Strip: Hamas.
