Steve Price: Youth crime rates, aren’t a contest, Harriet, people are dying

How dare Harriet Shing make the sickening observation that Victoria has the country’s lowest youth offending rate after a young man was killed in an alleged hit-run in Burwood. She must offer a grovelling apology — and then she must quit.

Call for Premier to get tough on youth crime

State government minister Harriet Shing needs to issue a grovelling apology to the family of a man killed in an alleged hit-run Tuesday night and then she needs to quit.

My god, what sort of person when asked about the Burwood crash involving an allegedly stolen Jeep Cherokee and blurts out some garbage about needing to understand what happened.

Let me make it simple for you, Harriet, within the laws of what I can say as police continue their investigation.

A 28-year-old Ashburton man driving his Toyota along Warrigal Rd at 7.30 p.m. – possibly heading home from work – makes a right-hand turn on to Highbury Rd.

Probably a turn he’s made hundreds of times before.

He doesn’t make it and after being dragged from the vehicle by a local whose brick fence was demolished in the accident the Toyota driver dies on the side of the road.

Another eyewitness grabs one of what is thought to have been up to six people in the vehicle, a 15-year-old girl who allegedly threatens to bash him if he doesn’t let her go. He responds in the heat of the moment telling the girl she has killed somebody. The noise from the accident is described as sounding like an explosion.

Are you regretting what was reported that you said next when asked about yet another out-of-control night with teenagers driving stolen cars when they are not even old enough to get a licence?

How dare you make the sickening observation, Minister Shing — which is typical from an Allan government in complete denial about out-of-control youth crime – that Victoria has the lowest youth offending rate in Australia.

What a disgrace. It’s not a contest. A man is dead he was just 28 years old innocently driving along a main road. Took his last breath in a mangled Toyota taken out by a stolen car allegedly carrying up to six people at high speed.

Don’t call it joy riding — it’s death riding, and Victorians have had enough.

Harriet, you went on to again wheel out the typical leftie bleat about knowing youth offending is coming from a “very small group” who are “persistent offenders.”

Are you serious? People are dying — just listen to the family of doctor Ash Gordon, allegedly murdered by two 16-year-old boys.

Minister, I know your portfolio includes things like housing-which is in crisis just by the by- but can I point out as you blather on about low rates of youth crime that offences committed by 14-to-17-year olds, were up last year nearly 30 per cent, the highest rate since 2009 and crime by 10-to-13-year olds is up nearly 23 percent including assaults, burglaries and car thefts.

Harriet, be big enough to admit your comments were insensitive at best, ignorant more likely, and say sorry.

Then do us all a favour and take off your leftie blinkers and convince your colleagues that raising the age of criminality from 10 to 12 this year and up to 14 by 2027 can’t happen in a child crime crisis.

Dedicate the dumping of this crazy plan to that poor 28-year-old who died on Tuesday night on Warrigal Rd.
