Steve Price: Greens leader Adam Bandt no Robin Hood

Adam Bandt has described himself as the Robin Hood of Australian politics but in reality he’s leading a radical Left party that’s been involved in disgraceful pro-Palestinian protests.

Delusional Greens leader Adam Bandt described himself this week as the Robin Hood of Australian politics.

Give me a break Adam.

Far from being the leotard wearing, bow and arrow armed crook stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, you lead a radical Left party that’s been involved in disgraceful pro-Palestinian protests. You are living in some dream world mate.

Bandt laid out his Greens party dream in an interview with The Australian newspaper.

In it, he took aim at Federal Labor over their criticism of his inability to discipline party members over their involvement in violent pro-Palestinian rallies where MP’s electoral offices were defaced with anti-Semitic graffiti. The Greens leader is in denial over the participation of party members in these protests.

Denial should be Adam’s middle name.

Under his leadership concern for the environment – protecting trees and waterways Bob Brown style – has been replaced by a radical agenda of anti-America, anti-business, pro-Palestine activism born out of the self-centred smug, inner city climate change promoting, university types who vote Green.

He told The Australian he was seeking to win younger voters to the Greens and accused the major parties of abandoning the next generation claiming there was a whole class of people across society locked out of housing, locked out of decent jobs, and put into huge debt with no chance of paying it off.

I presume he is talking about HECS debt and his plan to wipe the slate clean for every student regardless of income.

That is the point, where reality should bite for our Robin Hood. The question is where the money is coming from for these fantasies he promises?

Of course the Greens and Bandt will never have to worry about that because they will never be in charge.

A strong showing at the election however could see them play the role of the ultimate wreckers or even deal makers and that should scare all of us.

In the same interview he ruled out an alliance with Labor in a minority government – and Labor says it wouldn’t entertain that either – but desperate times change people’s minds.

So, let’s ask ourselves what do the Greens really stand for outside this fairy-tale Robin Hood tale Bandt tossed out there this week. What are their policies on things like drugs, climate change, refugees and military alliances with – and this must keep Bandt awake at night – a Donald Trump America.

Given we are not living in Nottingham Forest but in the real-world of 2024, drugs and their abuse is a huge social problem.

The published Greens policy would legalise the sale and use of cannabis. They would further decriminalise personal use and possession and non-commercial sale of drugs – all drugs. Think ice, heroin and cocaine but as the policy says – all drugs.

The Greens would legalise the sale and use of cannabis.
The Greens would legalise the sale and use of cannabis.

Alcohol advertising however would be banned during sport and drug sniffer dogs and strip searches by police banned by Adam’s party. Individual drug use would not be a crime and they are more worried about the use of legal drugs like tobacco and alcohol.

The Greens, if allowed to rule, would enact an Indigenous treaty with First Nations people and – wait for it – establish a First Nations Voice. That’s the Voice sixty per cent of you said no to in a referendum. The Greens say, stuff you, we will do it anyway.

As well Indigenous people affected by the Frontier Wars 240 years ago would be paid reparation, and the community saving income management plan for indigenous communities, dumped.

Asylum seeker refugees would be allowed to settle in Australia regardless of how they get here – get set for a flood of illegal boats – there would be no detention centres and the Greens blame the influx of refugees on – wait for it – climate change.

On climate change Robin Hood gets very busy. Net zero emissions by 2035 or sooner. Remove all fossil fuel subsidies and convert 100 per cent of our electricity generation to renewables as soon as possible. Even Chris Bowen isn’t that stupid. The price of electricity would be pegged to the damage it did to the environment so get set for soaring power bills.

Coal fired power stations would be banned under the Greens.
Coal fired power stations would be banned under the Greens.

Coal fired power stations, gas mines and oil wells would be banned, and coal fired power stations decommissioned and within six years Adam and his merry band of men would stop all coal exports and fossil fuels and even gas by 2040.

Bandt’s crazy Robin Hood analogy starts to make sense when you read that manifesto. Robin Hood was born in 1160 and the first reference to him was around 1377 so what the Greens really want to do is take us back to those times of getting around on horses, shooting arrows at things to eat and heating your house with firewood.

Their policy positions read like a Year 12 student’s essay and should frighten the hell out of all of us.

Adam Bandt has held the Federal seat of Melbourne since 2010 that’s five elections over fourteen years. But does anyone seriously believe he has done anything to improve this City?

Good luck Adam with your medieval fantasy and let’s all hope and pray you never get your hands on real power.
