Fire threat: 90,000 households still at risk despite Samsung washine machine recall

MORE than 90,000 households are unaware there is an inferno threat lurking in their laundry.

MORE than 90,000 households are unaware there is an inferno threat lurking in their laundry.

Close to a year ago Samsung recalled six top-loading washing machine models that can catch on fire. About 145,000 of these machines were sold from 2010 to 2013 — 55,600 of them in NSW.

But recently Samsung revealed to NSW Fair Trading that there had been a poor response to the recall, which is believed to be the largest of its type in Australian history.

Fewer than 21,000 of the machines sold in NSW have been recalled and fixed. Nationally, only 53,300 have been checked and repaired.

NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe said the number of consumers still unaware of the potential risks were “very concerning”.

If you have a Samsung washing machine you should check to see if it is one of the recalled models.

The models that have been recalled are: SW75V9WIP, SW65V9WIP, SW70SPWIP, SW80SPWIP, WA85GWGIP and WA85GWWIP.

Model details can be found on the back of the machine.

If you believe your machine is affected contact Samsung’s “product safety hotline” on 1800 239 655 from 8am to 8pm Monday to Sunday or email wm.samsung@samsung.com.

Samsung will then arrange for an authorised repairer to do a free in-home service.
