Men in power have consistently stood by broadcaster Chris Smith, and provided him with glowing references and second chances. Who will vouch for him now, asks Annette Sharp?

Our exclusive interview last weekend with the woman 2GB broadcaster Chris Smith exposed himself to in 1998 prompted a rash of stories and recollections from readers needing to vent about their own Smith experiences.
At the heart of many reader stories was a recurrent theme that should speak to men in power who have consistently stood by the broadcaster and provided him with the glowing references.
One of them was former Nine managing director David Leckie, who was posthumously and laughably given an AM this year.
Smith was given many second chances throughout his career.
But following his recent sacking from 2GB and Sky News, Smith will be chasing new referees at this present time.
With two young sons enrolled at posh private school Shore, and a new multimillion-dollar mortgage on Sydney’s north shore, the 60-year-old, who also has two older children from his first failed marriage, will again be chasing the big bucks, the limelight and approval of the boys’ club.
It remains to be seen who will give him another chance this time, following his inappropriate behaviour at an office Christmas party.
IS RICHARD WILKINS STEPPING AWAY FROM THE CAMERA?
Is the sun finally setting on Richard Wilkins’ long media career?
According to Nine insiders, Today’s longtime entertainment reporter will have a reduced role on air in 2023.
After 35 years, Wilkins recently had a change of title. Nine now call him “Network Entertainment Editor” — it’s a subtle change of title that suggests the 68-year-old’s future might lie off camera.
In the past two years, Wilkins’ Today appearances have been reduced.
Now sources insist he is about to be replaced as the co-host of Nine’s Weekend Today, likely by Charles Croucher.
Co-host Belinda Russell’s contribution is also understood to be under review.
