Will this civil war in France finally end our disastrous addiction to race politics?

France has suffered nearly a week of race riots since two police officers shot dead Nahel Merzouk, of Algerian-Moroccan background.

I’ve heard reporters seemingly side with the rioters, most apparently from France’s huge Muslim minority.

French society is racist, they say. Police especially. And these rioters are the “marginalised”, protesting against racism.

But the truth is on tape. This is a war on France, and the racists are on the streets.

One tape shows Merzouk’s car being stopped by the two officers, squeezed against a wall.

No wonder they stopped him. Merzouk had again been caught driving a car despite being just 17 and unlicensed. He had also been driving dangerously, and the car – a Mercedes with Polish number plates – was clearly not his.

And no wonder police were nervous, given Islamist radicalism in France.

They told Merzouk not to move, but the tape shows the car taking off. One officer fired and Merzouk died.

You may think that a terrible over-reaction by the officers, and one now faces charges of involuntary homicide.

But the new tribalism doesn’t wait for facts or for the justice system to act.

It works like this: Us against them. Touch one of our tribe, you touch us all, and we’ll destroy your joint.

Indeed, Muslim protesters were filmed telling reporters: “We were born Muslims, praise be to Allah. If the police kill us, we have the right to kill them. It is written in the Koran”

Elsewhere, two white policemen, off duty, were beaten unconscious. Many others were attacked with fireworks, stones and a shotgun.

Other outrages confirmed this was a racist attack on France.

Shops were looted and hundreds of buildings torched. Public libraries in Marseilles and Metz were burned down. Buses and trains were destroyed. Us vs them.

Here’s a truth, tribal politics censors.

More than 10 per cent of France’s population is Muslim, and many haven’t integrated as well as have other minorities, like the Jews and Vietnamese.

For one, France’s Muslim minority tends to be poorer, but race politics encourages it to blame not themselves or aspects of their culture inhibiting integration.

Blame France instead. Us against them.
