Andrew Bolt: Blanking history a sign of true totalitarian

WHEN councils call us ignorant, rewrite history and try to force their beliefs on us, it’s time freedom lovers stood up, writes Andrew Bolt.

Mayor defends decision to dump Australia Day

NOW we see what today’s totalitarians look like — exactly like the Greens running Melbourne’s Darebin council and wiping out our history.

This inner-city council has already renamed the local Batman Park, removing the name of the man who founded Melbourne after buying the land from local Aborigines.

This week, it also banned Australia Day ceremonies on January 26, to cut the link with the arrival of the First Fleet that brought Western civilisation to this continent.

Mayor Kim Le Cerf sneered that if Australians were better educated they’d “feel ashamed to be celebrating on January 26”, which is why her council had banned it for them.

DAREBIN COUNCIL VOTES TO DUMP AUSTRALIA DAY, LOSES RIGHT TO HOLD CITIZENSHIP CEREMONIES

Blanking out history is a true sign of the totalitarian. Stalin did it by having photographic records doctored to remove images of his enemies. The French revolutionaries behind the great Terror did it by destroying monasteries and restarting the calendar as if history started with them.

Mao did it by declaring war on the “Four Olds” — including old culture — and tearing down reminders of China’s past, from the old walls of Beijing to the cemetery of Confucius.

Now we see what today’s totalitarians look like — exactly like the Greens running Melbourne’s Darebin council and wiping out our history.

All were Leftists who feared having the public reminded by monuments or ceremonies that greater people with other gods built the glories on which these new tyrants stood. The Greens of Darebin — and of Yarra council — are puppies of this same dangerous breed, rating themselves infinitely more moral than all who went before yet scared we won’t agree.

But these Greens are not just totalitarian in their wiping of history. They are also totalitarian in their methods — as far as we let them.

Take how Darebin banned Australia Day. Australia Day actually has overwhelming public support. A McNair poll in February said only 15 per cent of Australians wanted the day shifted from January 26.

So the council did not dare ask its 140,000 ratepayers whether to scrap its citizenship ceremonies on that date. Those ratepayers would not be “educated” to the council’s tastes.

So Darebin council, like Yarra council before it, instead ran an outrageously rigged poll to fabricate support for what its Greens wanted all along.

It literally sent an online poll to its mates — to the council’s own 27 advisory groups and Aboriginal advisory committee.

Only 81 of these advisers and activists, presumably the most committed, responded.

Even then, only 60 per cent agreed with moving the council’s citizenship ceremony from January 26.

That’s just 48 activists in all.

So even among the council’s hand-picked mates and hirelings, the scrapping of Australia Day ceremonies was controversial, yet this is the mandate Darebin council claims for vandalising our past.

This disgrace is further evidence that a new intolerance is on the rise. Leftist bullies are growing in power and vehemence, destroying our traditions, rewriting our history and demanding subservience to their new pieties — or else.

Look at the ABC’s war against Christianity, including a vicious campaign to vilify the Catholic Church and falsely smear evangelical Christians as the worst wife-beaters.

LOSING FAITH IN THE ABC OVER ATTACKS ON CHRISTIANITY

ENEMIES OF CHRISTIANITY DECLARING NEW WAR ON RELIGION

Look how three preachers opposed to same-sex marriage have been dragged before an anti-discrimination tribunal, one by a Greens candidate.

Look how protesters punch, threaten, abuse and picket meetings of Christian leaders and other supporters of traditional marriage.

Look how activists, including Greens supporters, have hijacked the education bureaucracy to even ban children in Queensland state schools from praising Jesus in the playground. Look how the masked thugs of the Antifa movement physically attack conservatives, nationalists and activists of the Right.

Look how journalists ridicule and shut out scientists and other critics of global warming alarmism.

And look how the eyes of these extremists shine with holy fervour as they howl and smash. Philosopher Bertrand Russell, a Nobel Laureate, warned us of their type — of people so convinced they’re good that they do evil.

“Much that passes as idealism is disguised hatred or disguised love of power,” he said.

Author and theologian CS Lewis described them even better.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive,” he said. “Those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

And we see that now — righteous Greens abusing voters as uneducated, destroying our traditions without permission, rigging polls and backing laws to muzzle their critics.

Oh, and staying silent as masked supporters attack their enemies in the street.

The new totalitarians grow strong. Are there freedom lovers to stop them?
