Operation Ludlow II launched in Alice Springs, Katherine, and Tennant Creek
The summer policing operation has officially begun, bringing bring mounted patrols, ATVs, bicycles, motorbikes, and more foot and vehicle patrols to towns in the Territory.
A 10-week summer policing operation has launched in the Territory, after months of planning “to improve for the sequel” a NT Police acting superintendent says.
Operation Ludlow II is now underway in Alice Springs, Katherine, and Tennant Creek and is due to end February next year.
The summer school holidays policing operation will bring mounted patrols, ATVs, bicycles, motorbikes, and foot and vehicle patrols.
NT Police acting superintendent Terry Simpson said “we are building upon the success of last year’s Operation Ludlow and have been planning for months to improve for the sequel”.
“The public can expect to see high-visibility patrols, officers engaging with the community, visiting businesses, and patrolling the CBD and surrounding suburbs,” he said.
“We encourage our community members and visitors to stop our police officers for a chat, as the officers are there to serve and protect the community.
“Lastly, I hope that residents and visitors to the Territory enjoy the break and stay safe during the festive season.”
The policing operation comes as demand is “expected to peak” over the summer school holidays, with the operation targeting youth offending, property crime, anti-social behaviour, and alcohol related offending, police say.
Local police and new recruits will resource the operation.
“Katherine’s Strike Force Cerberus will continue to target recidivist offenders over this period, and the Safer Streets Patrols in Tennant Creek will deliver proactive, highly visible patrols supporting frontline general duties response activities as part of the operation,” NT Police said.
“Local Tennant Creek police will be able call upon specialist support to deploy to the region to enhance their capacity if required.”
A recent crime spree through Tennant Creek led to renewed curfew calls, but on Wednesday, an NT Police spokesman said there were no plans for a curfew for the town.
“In Tennant Creek, the police-led Interagency Tasking Coordination Group will continue to meet regularly to share information to address local community safety and antisocial behaviour issues in a collaborative approach,” he said.
The first Operation Ludlow concluded in February this year.
Police made 301 arrests during the operation, they said at the time.
