In a big boost for aspiring aircraft engineers, one of the nation’s longest serving aviation operators has committed to unearthing Territorian talent.

Chartair this week announced further apprentice aircraft maintenance engineer positions had been added to Darwin and Alice Springs in a bid attract the next generation of skilled workers.

Chartair chief executive Luke Fisher said the “hands-on” experience would empower the Territory’s newest apprentices.

“Our investment in apprentice aircraft maintenance engineers is a testament to our commitment to excellence and sustainability in the aviation industry,” he said.

“These apprentices represent the future of aviation, and we are dedicated to providing them with the knowledge and hands-on experience they need to excel in their careers.

“We are focused on delivering a supportive work environment, allowing our apprentices to draw on the knowledge of our more experienced staff.”

Chartair currently employs six apprentices between first and fourth years, and is on the hunt for a new first year apprentice aircraft maintenance engineer to join their Alice Springs team.

Darwin-based apprentice Nathan Downham said he had gained “a lot” from the experience.

“(The apprenticeship) can be challenging, but it’s well worth it,” he said.

“I have found the experience really good and I’ve learned a lot of new skills and met a lot of people.”

Mr Downham, 18, is a third year apprentice and said there were plenty of highlights beyond the workshop.

“I’ve had the opportunity to do a fair few things like fly to places and fix planes – it’s pretty unreal.”

Mr Fisher said his company was committed leading the flying industry.

“By nurturing fresh talent in aircraft maintenance engineering, we are not only investing in the success of individuals but also reinforcing our position as a leader in the aviation sector.”
