A north shore woman has dramatically survived a fire that engulfed her unit block after throwing her own mattress out the window and diving onto it from her second storey apartment.
The scenes played out about 5am Friday morning on Military Rd, Neutral Bay after a ground floor unit went up in flames.
The woman survived the jump but sustained a serious leg injury and was transported to Royal North Shore Hospita, NSW Ambulance said.
Another woman, whose unit is where the fire started, was also taken to hospital with minor burns.
Fire and Rescue NSW said they believed a methylated heater started the fire this morning.
Six trucks and more than 20 firefighters arrived to the blaze that has left the unit block torched.
Firefighters also discovered a cat among the chaos that was given oxygen by firefighters and rushed to a nearby vet clinic by truck.
