Just after 7pm the stranger allegedly used the handle of a knife and her fist to hit the woman in the face before pushing her to the ground.

Police allege the woman stabbed the other woman in the shoulder before running away.

Police Transport Command officers were in the area at the time and chased the alleged stabber on foot before arresting her in Belmore Park.

The 35-year-old was taken to Day Street Police Station while the older woman was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

She sustained cuts to her face and swelling to her head as well as the stab wound in her shoulder.

The younger woman was charged with causing grievous bodily harm, using a weapon to avoid apprehension, offensive behaviour, wielding a knife in public and possession of a knife in public.

The 35-year-old was refused bail and will face Central Local Court later today.
