A man has died and a woman injured after a horrific three vehicle crash in Sydney’s Airport Tunnel this morning.

A truck and two cars collided in the southbound lane of the tunnel, just before the M5 turn-off, at 6.45am.

A Toyota Yaris driving northbound collided with the south travelling truck, with the impact then hitting a northbound Kia Sportage.

The 32-year-old male driver of the Toyota died at the scene, and the 38-year-old woman driving the Kia was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The third 32-year-old truck driver was taken for mandatory testing.

Heavy peak hour traffic backed up for kilometres with three lanes closed, however traffic is returning to normal this afternoon.

In another tragic crash this morning, a motorcyclist died at Prestons after colliding with a car about 6.10am.

Paramedics arrived at the corner of Progress Circuit and Lynn Pde and administered CPR but the man died at the scene.

The driver of the car, a 39-year-old man from Westmead, was taken to hospital for mandatory testing and this morning charged with negligent driving occasioning death.

Ambulance Inspector John Brotherhood said the two deaths were “utterly devastating”.

“Responding to these sorts of scenes are quite disturbing. As a first responded, you are often confronted with a lot of atrocities and trauma,” Insp Brotherhood said.

“Our paramedics – across both jobs – put their training to the test and did everything they could for the patients involved,” he said.

Earlier, a young woman had to be freed from her vehicle after it hit a pole at high speed just after 2am at Pitt Town in Sydney’s northwest.
The 23-year-old veered off the road and hit the pole, before spinning out into the bush and hitting a gate, police said.

Emergency services helped free the woman who was trapped in her car for about an hour.

She was the only person in the car at the time.

Police were seen talking to a man believed to be known to the woman at the scene of the crash, who appeared distressed.

She sustained compound fractures in her right arm and her lower legs.

The woman was flown to Westmead Hospital where she is in a serious but stable condition.
