Seven people were killed on NSW roads during the Anzac weekend with police saying there were too many stories of good people making bad decisions. Sydney woman Shania McNeill was the latest person to lose her life in a horrific crash.

Seven people were killed on NSW roads during the Anzac weekend with police saying there were too many stories of good people making bad decisions.

Operation Go Slow, the state’s Anzac long-weekend road safety operation, started at mighnight on Wednesday and finished last night.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy said while the numbers of people detected speeding and drink driving have declined, motorists need to be “held accountable”.

“Driving is a privilege, not a right and there were some people we detected across the holidays who need to accept this and know they will be held accountable for their actions,” Assistant Commissioner Corboy said.

A young woman died after a horror car crash in northwest Sydney and police could only shake their heads in disbelief as they arrested another motorist for drink-driving after she pulled up to the scene of the collision.

Shania McNeill, 21, from Werrington Downs near Penrith, died when the Suzuki she was driving and another vehicle collided head-on at Berkshire Park just before 1.15am on Sunday.

Four other people were injured in the incident and police are investigating.

A duty officer from Hawkesbury was driving along Richmond Rd when he saw passers-by helping people out of two wrecked cars, a Suzuki Baleno and a Nissan Micra.

Police said Ms McNeill’s car was travelling eastbound when it collided with the Micra in the westbound lane.

Ms McNeill and her two passengers were freed, and police and witnesses performed CPR on her but she died before paramedics arrived.

The two other women, aged 20 and 23, from Richmond, were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Two men, a driver aged 61 and his passenger, 39, were freed from the Nissan. One man was flown to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition while the second man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Ms McNeill’s flatmate and friend Rachel Macefield said that Ms McNeill was one of a kind and had “changed her life”.

“She brought light to my life,” she said. “In such a short amount of time she has put such a big impact on me and my whole family and anyone that knew her. She was honestly just a beautiful soul.”

While police were at the scene of the fatal crash a 22-year-old woman attempted to turn right into the crime scene.

She was pulled over and breath-tested, returning a blood alcohol concentration reading of 0.07.

The Carnes Hill woman was arrested and charged with low-range drink-driving and driving while her ­licence was suspended.

OTHER ACCIDENTS ACROSS NSW

A man died at Vittoria near Orange on Thursday afternoon with a passing motorist finding the man’s car. It was smashed and the driver had died at the scene.

Earlier on Thursday, a driver was killed when his car hit a tree near Mudgee just before dawn.

Police say the man’s station wagon left the Castlereagh Highway at McDonalds Creek and hit the tree about 6am. He died at the scene.

An hour later, the body of a 46-year-old man was found next to a motorcycle down an embankment off George Booth Drive in Seahampton near Newcastle.

Meanwhile, another motorcyclist died northwest of Canberra on Wednesday afternoon.

The 52-year-old was found by a driver after coming off his bike on the Nottingham Road Bridge at Wee Jasper south of Yass.

A car and cement truck collided head-on on Wednesday afternoon at Sandy Point with the car catching alight after impact. The car driver died at the scene.

A 69-year-old man also died on Wednesday morning when three utes were involved in a crash at Newee Creek on the NSW mid north coast.
