A woman has died after the car she was travelling in was struck by another vehicle, which had allegedly been spotted driving dangerously in the Newcastle area minutes earlier.
NSW Police said officers were patrolling on Newcastle Rd at North Lambton just after 2.40am on Sunday when they spotted a Holden sedan that was allegedly driving dangerously.
They did not pursue the car for safety reasons.
Police said a short time later, the Holden collided with a Hyundai sedan further down the road.
A passenger in the Hyundai — a woman believed to be aged in her 50s — died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.
Paramedics treated the Hyundai driver – a 28-year-old woman – before taking her to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.
Police said the driver of the Holden had left the scene before officers arrived but the rear passengers - two girls aged 15 and 17 – were treated at the scene before being taken to John Hunter Hospital under police guard.
A critical incident team from Hunter Valley Police District will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command with oversighted from the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
