A woman has died after a fire tore through her home in Sydney’s west on Tuesday.
Firefighters were called to Cardigan St in Auburn shortly before 6.30pm following reports a property was engulfed in flames.
Eight fire trucks and more than 30 firefighters arrived to find the single-level home fully alight.
Neighbours reported a person inside the home and under extreme conditions, a firefighter entered the property through a window and unlocked the front door.
While one team searched for the occupant, another worked to contain the fire, which was rapidly advancing.
The woman, 63, was found unresponsive in a front room and carried outside.
Firefighters and an off-duty paramedic immediately began CPR, but despite their efforts, she could not be revived.
“It took about an hour to extinguish the fire,” NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry said.
“Unfortunately, despite sustained efforts to revive the woman, she was unable to be saved.”
The fire escalated which caused the roof to collapse, forcing firefighters to withdraw from the home and continue battling the blaze from outside.
Two adjoining properties were also under threat but crews managed to protect them, with only one suffering minor heat damage.
The fire was extinguished and investigations are now underway into the cause of the blaze.
While yet to be formally identified the woman is believed to be the 63-year-old sole occupant of the home.
