A woman is fighting for life after a multi-vehicle crash in Sydney’s south west on Wednesday morning.
Two trucks and a Hyundai sedan collided in a “serious accident” on Henry Lawson Dr near the M5 motorway on ramp in Milperra just before 11am. The 31-year-old woman, the single occupant of the vehicle, was thrown from the car and suffered critical head injuries.
Emergency services including seven NSW Ambulance crews attended the scene, before the woman was transported to Liverpool Hospital in a critical but stable condition by a specialist team of paramedics.
The two truck drivers, aged 26 and 49, were treated for minor injuries and taken to Bankstown Hospital for mandatory testing. They are assisting police with inquiries.
NSW Ambulance duty operations manager Inspector Karen Nichols described the crash scene as “absolutely horrendous” when paramedics arrived.
“When we receive reports that two trucks and a car are involved in a crash you never really know what to expect, that state of the patients involved and how extensive the injuries are,” Inspector Nichols said.
“Paramedics worked with other emergency services in an extremely complex situation to get to patient as quickly as possible.”
Police established a crime scene and are urging witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward. Bankstown Police Command Detective Superintendent Murray Reynolds told The Daily Telegraph that the cause of the “horrific” accident was still unclear and that the female motorist was “absolutely” in his thoughts.
“What we know at this point is that one truck was travelling north on Henry Lawson, the other was travelling south, and at some point the Hyundai collided with both trucks,” Supt Reynolds said.
“It was a horrific car accident. It was a shock to motorists in traffic and residents who came out.”
Traffic diversions are still in place with Henry Lawson Dr closed in both directions between Milperra Rd and the M5 motorway due to significant clean-up following the accident.
“Obviously with one of the trucks carrying pallets there was a lot of strewn material across the road, as well as our police investigation the clean up took quite some time,” Detective Superintendent Reynolds said.
“We apologise to road users for that, but we needed to investigate it and clean it up properly.”
Supt Reynolds reminded motorists to stay alert around larger vehicles on roads, prevent distractions and not to drink and drive as the investigation continues.
