Wingham couple wed after floodwaters left bride stranded on their big day

There’s now no doubt love can conquer even fire or flood, after one couple beat all the odds to marry despite being torn apart by rising floodwaters.

NSW Floods: A one in 100-year event

They say love conquers all but these Mid North Coast newlyweds proved not even a once in fifty year flood could keep them apart.

Pregnant bride to be Kate Fotheringham, 30, and groom Wayne Bell, 33, made it down the aisle in flood-stricken Wingham on Saturday after a cry for help on social media went viral.

Ms Fotheringham, who is 18 weeks pregnant, took to Twitter on Saturday morning after floodwaters left her cut off from her partner and their wedding venue, pleading for a helicopter company to help get her from her parents property in Killawarra to her big day.

Affinity Helicopters in nearby Port Macquarie answered the call, and ferried Ms Fotheringham and her parents to safety just in time for the nuptials to begin.

Ms Fotheringham told The Daily Telegraph the whole experience was “surreal” but she and her new husband were “so grateful” to tie the knot despite all odds.

“It was absolutely crazy, we cried when the helicopter showed up, and then the catering company and my hair stylist cancelled but we managed to find replacements … it was like we were in a movie,” Ms Fotheringham said.

“It was super emotional, and only 80 of our 180 guests could make it but we still had such a fun time, and we’re so grateful to everyone that helped us make it happen.”

The couple even decided to get their wedding photos done in front of the flooded bridge over Dingo Creek, which blocked the five minute drive into town to the wedding.

“The photos turned out amazing, and honestly made an insane day even more meaningful, ” Ms Fotheringham said.

“The floods are devastating, we were so fortunate and we have no intention of making this about us when people in this area have been hit so hard, but if our story makes anyone smile then that’s really special.”

“And at least our guests can say the Fotheringham-Bell wedding is one they won’t forget.”
