Singers Willow Smith and Eddie Benjamin are more than musical collaborators.
The daughter of Hollywood actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith and the rising Australian star packed on the PDA at Sydney’s Bronte beach on Friday, as the mercury began to soar ahead of a record-hot Saturday.
The pair were spotted embracing in the surf and kissing each other in the sand, with Benjamin pictured wrapping his arms around Smith’s waist and kissing the back of her arm.
Sydney-born Benjamin is based in Los Angeles, where he’s been working with Smith on her recently released single Alone.
The pair arrived in Sydney last week so Smith could support Benjamin as he gave a guest performance at the black-tie GQ Man of the Year Awards on Wednesday night, hosted at Bondi Pavilion on his old stomping ground.
“Oh my goodness he is so talented,” Smith told The Daily Telegraph on the black carpet. “The proficiency with which he plays so many different instruments is crazy and you don’t really ever see that kind of talent nowadays. So you’ve got to cherish it, you’ve got to make sure that people see it.”
The 21-year-old Sydneysider was named Breakthrough Artist of the Year.
“I had a pretty cute time working with him,” Smith laughed while introducing the singer-songwriter.
Benjamin has collaborated with music industry titans like Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes and Earth, Wind & Fire, and with the release of his second EP Weatherman this year, has become a star in his own right.
As a teenager he was a regular performer at jazz clubs around Bondi, himself one third of blues and rock band Haze Trio, formed with two classmates at Rose Bay Secondary College.
“I grew up here, you know I recorded my first piece of music in the Bondi Pavilion studio when I was 13? So it’s quite a full circle moment,” he told the Telegraph, referencing Smith as a “homie”.
“One of my homies is actually here tonight, who I’ve been working with a lot. She’s my good friend that I call when I need to rob banks,” he joked.
“It’s a good vibe. We’ve been working on a lot of music. It’s been beautiful.”
Confidential spotted Smith and Benajmin exiting the after-party, attended by international superstar Troye Sivan, The Veronicas, US rapper Armani White and others, about 1am.
Smith held Benjamin up as he was unsteady on his feet, and they made a dash for the beach.
Meanwhile, 23-year-old Smith has been candid about her bisexuality and being polyamorous since teenagehood.
On Red Table Talk, the podcast she shares with her mother and grandmother, Smith has previously said she’s not interested in marriage, and could see herself with two partners: “Personally, male and female, that’s all I need”.
“Divorce is an epidemic. And people are trying to find meaning and true love,” Smith said on the podcast.
“There are so many different kinds of people in this world and so many things to learn.”
