A home has been set alight after it was struck by lightning during a severe storm that caused chaos over parts of Western Sydney on Monday afternoon.

Fire and Rescue NSW was called to a house fire at on Kobina Ave, Glenmore Park, after it was struck by lightning during Monday afternoon’s storm.

Responding FRNSW crews reported a large column of smoke coming from a well-lit roof.

An occupant of the home posted on a Facebook community group on Monday afternoon that her family was safe.

“Hi Everyone, it was my family (home) that has just burnt down on Kobina. Thanks for all the well wishes and support. My family are well and safe,” the post read.

This comes after three storm cells were working their way through western parts of Sydney and the Blue Mountains which caused flash flooding and damage to a shopping mall roof at around 5pm on Monday.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Jiwon Park said Penrith saw nearly 20mm of rain in half an hour and a maximum wind gust of 91km/h.

“Penrith was the highest in terms of rainfall across the Greater Western Sydney area,” Mr Park said

“The supercell peaked while it was parting through the Penrith and Schofield area.”

“It is heading northeast towards the Hunter area but it is weakening.”

The Blue Mountains also reported 2cm of hail on Monday afternoon and McMahon’s lookout copped 30mm in half an hour.

Meanwhile the NSW State Emergency Service received multiple call for damaged roofs in the fallout of the storm

“There was lots of calls for damaged roofs including a shopping centre roof that collapsed on Station St in Penrith,” NSW SES Duty Officer Sharon Fox said.

“We are expecting thunderstorm activity to continue in the next few hours.”

Australians along the country’s east coast have been told to settle in for a “significant drenching” over the next 10 days, marking a stormy end to summer.

Sydney can expect between 50 and 150mm rain by Wednesday, with daily afternoon thunderstorms that could generate flash flooding.
