Coffee drinkers have had it to the brim with rising prices and data shows the cost of the morning cuppa is getting higher in regional areas than in the city.
The price of a small cappuccino in regional NSW cost around 16 per cent more on average than the same cup of coffee in Sydney, according to The Daily Telegraph’s assessment of prices on the Hey You app.
Regional centres Port Macquarie, Newcastle and Orange were the most expensive, with prices averaging $4.33 per cup.
That’s compared to Western Sydney, where customers can still pay $3.66 on average.
Owner of Sydney’s Edes Restaurant & Bar, Bruno Goncalves said this year’s wholesale coffee prices have already surged and may continue to get worse.
“It’s going up an extra $3 per kg, it’s definitely the worst it’s been and unfortunately that has to be passed on,” he said. “It makes a massive difference to sales but there’s just no other way of getting around it.”
Coffee drinker Isabella Biasetto pays for quality over quantity, but admits the price is becoming an issue.
“I paid $4.50 for this and it’s just a piccolo, so I’d probably draw the line at the $6 range”.
Fellow coffee aficionado Andre Shevchuk said: “I paid $4 for my almond latte which I think is fair because having almond milk adds 50c to the original price, but anything more than $5 is far too expensive.”
In Orange, Academy Coffee owner Matthew Swiatkiwsky said soaring fuel prices are hitting locals with even higher prices than in Sydney.
“We have higher freight costs to get the coffee out our way, and that extra 50c per cup has just been that,” he said.
“We saw this coming and increased our costs late last year. Freight has increased a lot in the last few months and it’s still impacting our operating costs.”
