Who killed my brother?

Death haunts family ... Rian Strathdee.
Death haunts family ... Rian Strathdee.

"PLEASE stop the metal monster that killed my six-year-old brother, Rian. I am very angry with him. Me and my family don't want it to happen to anyone else."

This is the appeal 13-year-old Kym Payget Strathdee hopes will help catch the truck driver who destroyed his family in a hit-and-run accident.

Almost two years since Rian was killed when the family's Subaru station wagon was shunted off the Hume Hwy by a semi-trailer, Laurie Strathdee, 47, and his partner Jasmine Payget, 48, are no closer to finding justice.

As a NSW coroner prepares to chair a two-day hearing next month to spark public interest into the case, the Blue Mountains couple want this handwritten poster from Kym erected on national truck routes.

They believe someone other than the truck driver must know the truth and hope their son's words can trigger a memory or prick a conscience.

On the poster, Kym wrote that his family was "on our way to Canberra when the truck hit our car and we flipped down an embankment" at Sutton Forest, in the Southern Highlands, on November 27, 2004.

Rian died in the wreckage as Kym, then aged 11, lay trapped with serious head injuries.

Mr Strathdee, who suffered serious neck injuries, and Ms Payget, who escaped with cuts and abrasions, were thrown from the wreck.

Ms Payget yesterday told The Daily Telegraph the family's grief would not end until they knew the rogue truck driver had been caught.

"We just want know how it happened and to make sure it doesn't happen again," Ms Payget said.

"Was the truck driver tired, was he on drugs? Was he meeting a deadline? We've got so many questions."

Anyone with information on the crash or the truck driver should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
