Wentworth independent candidate Allegra Spender has blamed the Morrison government for her campaign’s use of diesel-guzzling trucks hauling electronic signs trumpeting her pro-climate platform, saying that a lack of planning meant there were not “better transport options.”
In recent days trucks hired out from Hyped Media have been spotted around Wentworth with Ms Spender’s photograph over the slogan, “A better climate for Wentworth.”
Hyped Media’s website touts its ability to deliver “Australia’s most exciting mobile advertising platform” and trucks that can carry three-sided “mobile LED advertising billboard(s)”.
However, Ms Spender’s rivals took issue with the campaign, suggesting that it was out of touch.
Incumbent Liberal MP Dave Sharma said, “I’m a little unsure how driving a diesel powered truck around Sydney all day for the sole purpose of advertising a political candidate supports a ‘better climate’ for Wentworth.”
“To me it seems like needless emissions,” he said.
Liberal Democrat candidate Daniel Lewkovitz said that the mobile advertising proved Ms Spender was “out of touch.”
“According to the tweets of this climate investor funded independent, the biggest issues for Wentworth residents are climate change and the ABC. How out of touch can you be?
“We need government for real people, not Twitter,” he said.
Defending the mobile billboards, Ms Spender said that “Australians don’t have a choice of low carbon vehicles because the government failed to plan ahead and develop better transport options.”
“I am determined to give the people of Wentworth a better choice at the next election and using vehicles will be an important part of the campaign,” she said.
