POLICE arrested the son of a prominent Sydney hotelier trying to flee the country less than 24 hours after the public execution of ex-bikie boss Mahmoud “Mick” Hawi outside a gym.

Detectives arrested the man at Sydney International airport and later executed a search warrant at a home in Sydney’s southwest where they seized a Desert Eagle handgun.

Yesterday NSW Police confirmed the man was arrested in connection to Hawi’s daylight execution outside Rockdale Fitness First gym but police have not established any links to the murder and still have “a number of lines of inquiry”.

Criminal groups squad commander, Detective Superintendent Deb Wallace told The Daily Telegraph the handgun seized by investigators had been forensically tested but was not believed to be the murder weapon.

“At this stage we have not established any links to Hawi’s murder but of course we still have to follow a number of lines of inquiry,” Superintendent Wallace said.

“Police did arrest him at the airport and conducted some initial inquiries however we intend to speak with him further.”

It was 12.10pm on February 15 when Hawi (pictured) was shot a number of times as he sat alone inside his black Mercedes 4WD outside the gym on West Botany St.

The former national president of the Comanchero outlaw motorcycle gang was rushed to nearby St George Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police believe the murder was carried out by two men wearing balaclavas who sped off in a grey Mercedes-Benz which was found burnt out a few streets away from the murder scene.

Hawi was once convicted of the 2009 Sydney Airport murder of rival bikie Anthony Zervas but the charge was sensationally downgraded to manslaughter.

The 37-year-old was released from jail in May 2015 and had promised his wife Carolina Gonzalez he would steer clear of his former bikie associates.

In the hours after his death Ms Gonzalez — the mother of his two children — was given permission to posthumously extract sperm from her dead husband in the NSW Supreme Court.

Detectives from the NSW Police criminal groups squad have been sifting through hundreds of theories and have looked at many possibilities — including bad blood with former bikie associates and whether his death had anything to do with his recent dealings in the construction industry.
