A MAN who was apprehended by police after jumping the fence of slain hitman Hamad Assaad’s home only hours after he was murdered will be extradited from Queensland to face firearms charges.
Walid “Wally” Elrich, 34, a close associate of Assaad and hired muscle of disgraced former deputy mayor Salim Mehajer, was arrested on the Gold Coast on Friday night in a joint sting between NSW and Queensland police.
A warrant was issued for Elrich’s arrest after NSW Police carried out a firearms prohibition order search at his Auburn home and allegedly found a gun. An FPO gives police the ability to raid a home at any time of the day or night without a warrant.
Elrich — who not charged over the incident at Assaad’s home — was refused bail and spent the weekend in the lockup. He is expected to be extradited back to Sydney today.
Another Sydney man, allegedly staying with Elrich at the Surfer’s Paradise apartment he was renting, was also arrested after police found a semi-automatic pistol stuffed down his pants. Police will also allege that he had a “small amount” of cocaine in his possession.
He was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a dangerous drug and bailed to appear in Southport Magistrates’ Court at a later date.
