The last piece of the jigsaw puzzle is almost in place as one the most complicated underground interchanges in the world will be ready for commuters within weeks.
We have the exclusive first look at the new $3.9 billion Rozelle interchange — 16 kilometres of road tunnels twisting underneath the inner-city suburbs of Rozelle, Lilyfield and Annandale.
Large panels of big black writing indicating exit points flank the walls.
Drivers will be funnelled in and out through more than a dozen entrance and exit points, connecting the City West Link, Iron Cove Bridge, the Anzac Bridge and the M4-M8 Link between St Peters and Haberfield.
The Interchange will connect up to the new Western Harbour Tunnel by 2028.
Roads Minister John Graham said the finished Interchange was an example of the hard work a skilled local workforce could complete over four years.
“It is a feat of Australian engineering which has become a reality due to the hard work of a skilled local workforce of 20,000,” he said.
“About 100,000 vehicles a day are expected to use Rozelle Interchange, and motorists from western and southwest Sydney will particularly appreciate the advantages of faster connection to the CBD and inner west.
“Motorists can start preparing for driving conditions inside the final piece of WestConnex with the help of animations provided by Transport for NSW.”
Mr Graham warned motorists should expect some congestion on surface roads around the interchange as people adapted to the new route.
Drivers are being promised they will be able to save up to 19 minutes on a trip between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD when using the interchange, but they can expect to pay for the pleasure.
The Rozelle Interchange toll cost is included in the WestConnex toll cap, and uses distance-based tolling based on how far you travel and your vehicle class.
