Val Squires remembered for contribution to Parramatta arts, culture

An advocate for the arts with a “wicked sense of humour” has been remembered as instrumental in making the Parramatta arts scene thrive.

Arts and community advocate Val Squires has been remembered as an arts advocate who spearheaded the establishment of the Riverside Theatres, where fittingly, a celebration of her life was held this month.

The honorary Riverside life member and volunteer with several community organisations died on July 24 aged 93.

Parramatta Lord Mayor Donna Davis paid tribute to the Rydalmere resident during a council meeting when her contributions to the arts were highlighted.

“Val was the driving force behind the establishment of the Riverside Theatres and was present at its opening night 34 years ago,’’ she said.

“As a founding member of the Friends of the Riverside Theatres, Val’s infectious enthusiasm for local arts and culture has left a strong legacy for our city.

“Val was one of the longest-serving members of council’s arts advisory committee, devoting significant time and energy to inform council’s vision for a city that fosters and supports the arts.

“Val was also dedicated to community service, volunteering and making a difference for local people.

“Val was passionate about providing opportunities for everyone to participate in the arts equally and was a driving force in establishing workshops for people with a disability to directly participate in the performing arts.’’

She also served for several years on the Parramatta Community Services and Information Centre management committee and was a director at Dundas Lions Club.

Cr Davis said Mrs Squires was also a beloved member of the City of Parramatta Arts Society, contributing as a talented artist and volunteering her time to form art workshops for people with disabilities.

“Renowned for her great character, vibrant personality and wicked sense of humour, Val will be sorely missed by the arts society and broader community for her dedication to promoting and supporting the arts in Parramatta,’’ Cr Davis said.

A celebration of Mrs Squires’ life was held at the Riverside Theatres on August 5.

Mrs Squires was a mother of four — Gary and Laura (deceased) and is survived by Pamela and Janice, her four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
