Two men are dead in a suspected murder suicide near Newcastle.
NSW Police were called to a home on Blackbutt Parade in Kotara South just before 5pm to multiple reports of gunshots.
Resident Peter Graham was watching the end of a football game on TV when he heard two loud shots ring out in the street outside.
“I thought my water system had blown up to be honest,” he said.
“I heard another bang and then I walked to the front of the house, leaned on the handrail and looked out.
“I looked to the right and then the left and saw a gentlemen, who I’d never seen before, sitting on the footpath with a rifle.
“He was holding it towards himself.
“We made eye contact and I sh*t meself.
“He lowered the gun towards me, but didn’t aim it at me, and I took off, ran inside and shut the door.
“He looked straight at me and it was frightening. He didn’t look upset, just scary.”
Mr Graham, who has lived in the street his entire life, said he called triple-0 immediately before he heard two more shots ring out.
Within a couple of minutes police were on the scene and found a man’s body, not far from where Mr Graham saw the gunman.
When officers walked inside the house (across the road from Mr Graham) they found the body of another man.
Both victims were in their 40s but it is unclear what the relationship between the two is.
Mr Graham said a woman in her 20s had lived in the house for about eight months.
Detectives from Lake Macquarie Police District are investigating the shooting.
