Police say a man is lucky to be alive after fracturing his skull during a brawl in the CBD overnight.

Two men, aged 21 and 23 got into an argument with two other men, aged 22 and 25 after the groups crossed paths about 12:30am on George St near Park St.

It’s believed the men were drinking at different bars and pubs nearby.

The argument escalated into a brawl with the youngest man allegedly knocking the 22-year-old man to the ground, causing serious head injuries.

He remains at St Vincent’s Hospital under police guard after being treated for a skull fracture.

A 23-year-old man was also taken to hospital and released to officers at Day St Police Station after receiving chest sutures.

The 21-year-old man was treated at the scene by paramedics for cuts to his face while the 25-year-old man was not injured.

Detective Superintendent Gavin Dengate said it’s extremely lucky anyone involved was able to leave hospital.

“One person has numerous sutures to his chest and he has been released. Another man has a fractured skull and doctors are working on him,” he said.

“We know the man got knocked to the ground and lost consciousness for a short period of time, he is very lucky that at this stage the prognosis is good.”

Three men have now been charged with the eldest man accused of affray and reckless wounding after allegedly slashing at the men with a box-cutter.

The 21-year-old is facing charges of affray and recklessly inflict grievous bodily harm over the alleged punch.

The 23-year-old has been charged with affray and was refused bail along with the other two men to appear at Central Local Court today.

Police will apply for all four to be banned from licensed venues around the city.

“The bans can last up to 12 months, we apply for the bans then it is up to the authorising authority to determine the severity,” Detective Superintendent Dengate said.
