Police have made close to 30 arrests in a two-day operation targeting shoplifting in the Tweed, with several criminal infringements issued.

Tweed-Byron Police conducted the operation on Tuesday and Wednesday last week and were assisted by centre management and security at Tweed City Shopping Centre and Tweed Mall.

As a result of the targeted sting, 28 people were detained for various offences including shoplifting, anti-social behaviour, and breach of bail.

Of those 28 people, 10 were issued court attendance notices, while 18 were issued criminal infringement notices.

The operation came after shopping centres in the Tweed had been deemed “Disneyland for eshays” by one resident, concerned over a recent violent assault at Tweed City Shopping Centre.

Tweed MP Geoff Provest weighed in on the rise of anti-social behaviour in the Tweed, saying the shopping centres were experiencing an increase in criminal activity.

Similar operations are expected to continue in the future, police say.
