A woman has been charged after a home in Murwillumbah was gutted by fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW and Rural Fire firefighters were called to the house fire on Commercial Rd in Murwillumbah just before midnight on Friday.

The property was fully ablaze when firefighters arrived.

They wore breathing apparatus to enter the home and search for occupants, but were initially forced back due to the electricity still being connected and the intensity of the fire, according to a statement.

Firefighters eventually managed to extinguish the blaze, which left the home badly damaged.

No one was home at the time of the fire.

Tweed/Byron Police also attended and described the home as “well alight” when officers arrived, a statement read.

Police set up a crime scene after the fire was extinguished and investigations began into the circumstances of the incident.

Officers arrested a 28-year-old woman about 1am on Saturday.

She was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station and charged with damage property by fire.

The woman was refused police bail and expected to face Lismore Local Court on Saturday.
