Tweed shows its generosity for families at Christmas

TWEED Daily News'Adopt-A-Family campaign is going strong, with only 14 families left needing help this Christmas.

The campaign started two weeks ago and its aim is to help families doing it tough by giving Tweed residents the chance to assist and adopt families in need.

Those who want to lend a hand can contact either the Salvation Army or St Vincent de Paul to choose a family to adopt.

UnitingCare had already adopted out all of its families in the lead up to December, and organiser Meryl Mills was surprised it had happened so quickly.

"I really didn't know they'd go so fast," she said.

"There are a lot of generous people around."

UnitingCare's effort leaves St Vincent's with eight families and the Salvation Army with six more to go.

Once a family has been adopted non- perishable food and suitable presents can be donated to their appropriate charities to spread a little Christmas cheer and bring a smile to those more unfortunate this season

Julie Burns of St Vincent de Paul said she was optimistic about the adoptions and sure all the families would be adopted before Christmas.

"I'm quite positive about it," she said.

"As soon as December hits all the adoptions will start coming in."

Richard Hardaker of the Salvation Army was also happy about how the campaign was going so far.
