The Tweed Shire Council will ask the state to stump up funding for planning consultants to help flood affected residents renovate their damaged buildings.

Councillor Rhiannon Brinsmead brought a notice of motion forward in the latest Tweed Shire Council meeting to write to the NSW Premier Dominic Perrott and the Minister for Planning and Homes Anthony Roberts seeking urgent funding assistance for those displaced in the Tweed Shire due to the floods.

The funding will ensure they have the appropriate level of technical guidance in their plans and applications for a rebuild of their homes.

“It’s about assisting people who have been displaced to get back in to their homes,” Ms Brinsmead said.

“Getting people back into their homes is just imperative at this stage.”

Mayor Chris Cherry commended Ms Brinsmead for the motion.

“It is a complex system and pretty much impossible to do without a consultant,” Ms Cherry said.

“It would be incredible if we could get the state to come to the party.”

In the notice of motion the Corporate Governance manager noted officers have estimated for Tweed that an allowance of $2000 to $3000 per property should be allowed for with an estimated 200 properties.

The total estimated cost would be between $400,000 and $600,000.

Councillor Nola Firth also spoke in favour of the motion, noting the council was in a “DA Crisis”.

All councillors voted in favour of the motion.
