Tweed council cops $500,000 cuts in Federal Budget

TRUE to his word of spreading the pain around, Tweed Shire Council has also taken a hit in Treasurer Joe Hockey's first Federal Budget with our roads one of the biggest victims.
The council estimates it will lose at least $500,000 over the next three years under cuts and reforms unveiled in the Budget on Tuesday night.
The council's road budget will be slashed by $157,000 over the next three years, including a cut of $26,000 in 2014/15.
It is due to a three-year freeze in road financial assistance grants.
The freeze on untied grants from 2014/15 will cost the council $66,000 next financial year and $400,000 over three years.
The council expects its operating costs to increase by around $10,000 due to the increase in fuel prices caused by indexing of the excise.
Other possible impacts include reductions to the Black Spots and Roads to Recovery programs with the effect on the Tweed currently unknown
The only good news identified at this stage is money which could be forthcoming under a new $60 million Bridges Renewal Program.
