If you are the daughter of an aerial surfing legend that won the Tweed Coast junior pro at age 15, the word prodigy is going to follow you around.

That is now firmly cemented next to Sierra Kerr’s name after she put the surfing world on notice with Tweed Coast junior pro win on Saturday following a fifth-place finish in the senior event.

Kerr overcame one of 2022’s most in-form surfers in Ellie Harrison as well as Victorian Gia Lorentson and Gold-Coast surfer Mia Huppatz in the junior event.

She took out her first World Surf League event in trademark fashion with her fins free and aerial surfing.

The result follows a third-place finish in the CARVE Great Lakes Pro at Boomerang Beach in February.

She has put herself in contention for a spot in the World Junior Championships to be held in El Salvador in May 2022 and couldn’t contain her excitement.

“I’m frothing right now,” Kerr said.

“I’d love to compete in the World Junior Championships so this win will hopefully go a long way to helping me get there. I’m just so happy right now I can’t explain it.”

Kerr has been touted as a future star before but she raised eyebrows with an incredible showing in the senior Tweed Coast Pro making the quarter-finals.

The 15-year old announced herself at the tournament on day one in a big way with a top score of 13.83 in the first round.

She topped every single round in the senior event against surfers double her age.

Her opponent in the last eight, Mooloolaba local Keely Andrew scored 10.67 against Kerr’s 7.13.

The Tweed Coast Pro was eventually won by the Sunshine Coast’s Dimity Stoyle.

Kerr’s father is 37-year old high-flyer Josh Kerr who last appeared at a Men’s Championship tour in 2017 and finished in third place at the famous J-Bay tournament in 2016.
