The prospect of finding a bargain has boosted the popularity of Tweed JUNKtion – The Tip Shop – at the Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre.
To keep up with demand, Tweed JUNKtion has extended its trading days and is now open on Tuesdays for a trial period as well as Wednesday to Saturday.
The shop is stocked with second-hand treasures that were destined for landfill at Stotts Creek – with staff sorting through items to see what might have value or could be reused.
There are always plenty of bargain hunters waiting for the doors to open, including retired builder Terry Downes from Banora Point.
Mr Downes is a regular at Tweed JUNKtion and restores items which he then sells at the Murwillumbah markets.
“I am always on the lookout for a broad range of items – I have found that when you are at the markets it‘s best to have a variety of goods to make your stall interesting,” he said.
“You never know what people are after and I have found coming to Tweed JUNKtion and searching, you can find some very interesting things.
“Being a retired builder, I am also after quality timber, especially from old furniture like bedheads which I can make into new things like toy boxes or benches.
“The staff here are friendly and know what I am interested in, so they keep an eye out for discarded items which they know I can restore or use.”
Mr Downes is just one of the many people who visit Tweed JUNKtion and contribute to the circular economy – keeping products and materials in use for as long as possible.
During the trial period, through to the end of July, Tweed JUNKtion will open from Tuesday to Friday 8.30am to 3pm and Saturday from 9am to 3pm.
