Tweed police allege two men linked to a ute stolen from Queensland bit an officer’s arm and tried to run them down in a car during a chaotic arrest in which a loaded pistol was found.
Officers from Tweed/Byron Police District went to a location on Forest Oak Crescent at Bogangar, near Cudgen, about 9.45am on Sunday.
Police tracked down a Toyota HiLux allegedly stolen from an address over the border just hours earlier.
Officers were organising for the ute to be towed when a 26-year-old man became aggressive, it’s alleged.
“While police were attempting to arrest the man, he is alleged to have bitten an officer on the arm,” police state.
Another man, 29, allegedly “used a Ford Ranger to drive towards the police officer as the arrest was being made before leaving the scene”.
A member of the public bravely stepped in to help police arrest the man, 26, and he was taken to Tweed Valley Hospital under guard.
“Following a search of the vehicle, police located and seized cable tie handcuffs, a loaded pistol, an amount of ammunition and a two-way radio,” police allege.
The accused was released from the hospital near Kingscliff taken to Tweed Heads Police Station, where he was charged with eight offences.
Meanwhile, the injured officer was taken to hospital for treatment and has been released.
Charges include receiving etc property stolen outside NSW valued at more than $15,000, destroying or damaging property, assault police and cause actual bodily harm, hindering or resisting police, possessing a prohibited weapon without permit and possessing an unregistered unauthorised pistol in public.
The man also faces one count each of possessing a loaded firearm in public and possessing ammunition without a licence or permit.
Police later arrested the 29-year-old man who was allegedly behind the wheel of the Ranger on Denman Court at Cudgen and he was also slapped with an array of charges, including receiving etc property stolen outside NSW valued at more than $15,000.
He has also been accused of using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, driving recklessly/furiously or in a speed/manner that is dangerous, possessing a prohibited drug and breaching bail
Both men were refused bail to face Tweed Heads Local Court on June 11.
