NSW Police say ‘no offence took place’ after investigating reported Greenway Dr, Tweed Heads abduction attempt

Police now say “no offence took place” after appealing to the public and releasing images over a supposed “attempted abduction” at Tweed Heads. Here’s what we know.

Police now say “no offence took place” after appealing to the public and releasing CCTV images after a supposed “attempted abduction” in the middle of the day at busy Tweed Heads.

NSW Police would not be drawn on the circumstances of the twist in the case, including whether the incident may be investigated as a hoax or prank, or whether charges could result.

On Thursday afternoon, Tweed-Byron Police said in a statement and on social media the “investigation into a reported attempted abduction in the state’s north has concluded”.

Officers were called to Original Mattress Factory on Greenway Dr, Tweed Heads South about 12.20pm on Saturday, February 24.

Police were told “a man attempted to push a 27-year-old woman into a vehicle”.

It was claimed the woman broke free and locked herself in the store out of harm’s way.

“Police detectives commenced an investigation into the incident and following a public appeal spoke with several people in relation to the incident,” the statement read.”

“Investigators have now determined that no offence took place and there will be no further police involvement.”

On the police Facebook post, one woman commented: “God, I hope they aren’t wrong!!!”

A man wrote: “Is this an apology to the poor blokes who everyone were pointing the finger at?”

Another commenter said she hoped any false report to police would result in charges.

CCTV shots made public after shop worker ‘abduction attempt’

February 28: Police have released CCTV footage of two vehicles they suspect were involved in the alleged attempted abduction of a 27-year-old woman in Tweed Heads at the weekend.

At about 12.20pm on Saturday, police were called to the Original Mattress Factory on Greenway Dr, Tweed Heads South, following reports of an attempted abduction.

Police attended and were told a man allegedly tried to push a 27-year-old employee of the bedding store into a vehicle.

The woman broke free and lock herself in the store, with the man fleeing the scene.

Police have now released CCTV images of two suspicious vehicles near the scene at the time of the alleged crime and are appealing for public assistance as investigations continue.

The first vehicle is described as a white Toyota Hiace, with an awning and roof racks.

The second vehicle is described as a champagne-coloured Holden Astra.

Police are urging the drivers of the vehicles, or anyone able to identify the drivers, to come forward or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Manhunt underway after alleged abduction attempt

February 26: Police have launched a manhunt after a young woman coming off her shift at a Tweed Heads business was forced into a car before she managed to break free and run.

At about 12.20pm on Saturday, police were called to the Original Mattress Factory at Greenway Drive, Tweed Heads South, following reports of an attempted abduction.

According to a NSW Police media spokesperson, officers attached to Tweed-Byron Police District attended and were told a man allegedly attempted to push a 27-year-old employee of the bedding store into a vehicle.

The woman managed to break free and lock herself in the store, with the man fleeing the scene.

Original Mattress Factory CEO Ian Vann told NewsLocal he had physically attended the scene in the aftermath, and that “the employee will get all the support she needs during this difficult time”.

“The staff member is safe at home and is not currently rostered on,” he said.

Tweed-Byron Detectives have commenced an investigation and urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
