A woman was found covered in blood after her attacker smashed a window of her caravan and cut himself.
Jon Luke Brinsmead, 58, pleaded guilty in Tweed Heads Local Court on Monday to destroying or damaging property and common assault.
According to police, Brinsmead then lived in Chinderah with the victim who lived in a caravan on the property. They had been in an intimate relationship for about a month.
On the night of May 6, the pair had been drinking, with Brinsmead consuming two and a half bottles of wine to himself.
During the night the power became disconnected and Brinsmead attempted to rectify the situation by running a power cord to the caravan.
The victim did not allow Brinsmead into the caravan and an argument began about whether a cooking apparatus was being too noisy.
Brinsmead began banging on the caravan before he smashed a window next to the door with his left hand, spraying blood all over the victim.
He said he was going to swing her up and strangle her by the neck, before he made his way into the caravan and pushed the victim with open hands.
Police arrived at 6pm where they saw the victim covered in blood.
In court, defence lawyer Geoff Gallagher said his client had previously been five years sober after struggling with alcohol, however this had gone down hill after drinking at a celebration.
Mr Gallagher said Brinsmead was remorseful for his actions and had paid to repair the window.
Brinsmead was convicted and sentenced to a conditional release order for 12 months.
