A woman alleged to have been driving 90km per hour in a 50km zone under the influence of alcohol thought she was being filmed for a Byron Bay reality TV show, a court has heard.

Christine Margaret Cassar, 58, appeared in Tweed Heads Local Court by audiovisual link on Monday.

Ms Cassar faces charges of drive recklessly, furiously or speed in a dangerous manner, failing to appear, shoplifting and common assault. No pleas have been entered.

She applied for bail represented by defence lawyer Cassandra Bennett.

Ms Bennett told the court her client believed she was being filmed at the time of the alleged offence.

“It was not her intention to commit offences, she was under the belief she was taking part in filming the reality TV show in Byron Bay,” Ms Bennett said.

She said her client suffered from PTSD and was suffering further hardship by being in custody.

Ms Bennett offered an address in Ma Ma Creek, near Gatton, Queensland, where Ms Cassar could live while on bail.

She said although these were serious matters Ms Cassar had minimal criminal history and if convicted would be unlikely to face a custodial sentence.

The police prosecutor told the court Ms Cassar was at risk of failing to appear as she never had a fixed long term address.

She said the alleged offending involved Ms Cassar driving 90km per hour in a 50km zone, allegedly while intoxicated.

The prosecution said the common assault allegedly involved spitting.

“Spitting is disgusting at the best of time, but during pandemic people are vigilant of contracting a disease,” she said.

She further alleged Ms Cassar refused to wear a mask.

Magistrate Geoff Dunlevy granted Ms Cassar bail, provided the resident of the Ma Ma Creek address contacted the court to confirm she was welcome there.

Ms Cassar also has conditions to report to Gatton Police Station weekly, to attend a general practitioner and accept any treatment reasonably recommended, including attending appointments, to not drink alcohol or take drugs unless those drugs are prescribed by a doctor and to take all prescribed medications in the correct prescribed dosages.

Her case was adjourned to August 23.
