An 18-year-old woman was woken and had a hand placed over her mouth to stop her screaming as she was sexually assaulted by an intruder who broke into her Tweed Shire home.
Tweed/Byron Police District has released CCTV footage of a man “who may be able to assist” with investigations after the terrifying attack at Banora Point just before 9.30am on February 1.
NSW Police stated a man not known to the woman “grabbed her and sexually touched her before threatening her and running from the house on foot”.
Tweed/Byron Police Detective Inspector Gary Sheehan said the young woman was at home minding her own business when the intruder forced his way in.
“He’s grabbed her over the mouth and he has sexually touched her very inappropriately, she screamed,” he said.
“He was able to make his way out of the house and ran off.”
Det Insp Sheehan said the woman was sleeping and did not notice anything until she was grabbed by the offender.
“She did the best she could to put up a fight and was able to make enough noise that she scared him off,” he said.
The woman was not physically injured.
Police were not able to say how the offender managed to bust his way into the home.
Det Insp Sheehan said the man in the footage allegedly removed a black face covering.
He said police took so long to inform the public about the attack because of investigative processes which needed to be undertaken.
“A lot of inquiries have been made (but) we don’t always like to release everything all at once … we think now is the appropriate time”, Det Insp Sheehan said.
The man police want to speak to has been described as caucasian, slim, with dark brown hair tied up into a bun. He was wearing black pants with white writing, a navy hooded jumper, and red shoes.
Police have urged anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
