A man facing serious drug charges has claimed the prison he was in was stopping him from speaking with his lawyers.
Aiden Christopher Brown, also known as Aydin Brown, had his matter mentioned in Tweed Heads Local Court last Friday.
The Nimbin man faces serious charges including supplying and manufacturing a prohibited drug.
He has not entered any pleas.
A town agent appeared in court on behalf of Ashkan Tai Lawyers and indicated they wished to withdraw from the case and said Mr Brown was “refusing” to speak with them.
Appearing by audiovisual link, Mr Brown protested and said he had been trying to speak to them.
“The jail here hasn’t corresponded with me and hasn’t said when I can and can’t talk to them,” Mr Brown said.
“I tried to call to them on the jail phone, that hasn’t been successful either.”
The matter was temporarily stood down before the town agent returned and said the principal lawyer had asked for an adjournment to re-establish contact.
The DPP prosecutor told the court they were also not in a position for charge certification.
She said a report needed to be considered by the deputy senior crown prosecutor.
“The consideration is whether or not the evidence is capable of establishing the large commercial quantity offence,” she said.
At this point Mr Brown began cheering on the video link.
Noticing his reaction, the prosecution reiterated this didn’t necessarily mean the charge would be dropped.
“It may still be a charge certificate is filed,” she said.
The matter was adjourned to August 13.
