AN outreach program providing an introduction to working in aged care will begin next week at Kingscliff TAFE.

The course is designed to assist students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and mature-aged, unemployed people who wish to gain skills for entering the aged care workforce or to do further study.

Applicants are not required to meet any entry requirements to participate in this course.

As part of the course students will be participating in field trips and work placement in an aged care facilities and therefore will be required to undergo a National Police Criminal History Check at their own cost.

Kingscliff TAFE Health, Aged Care Nursing Section head teacher, Anthony Rogers, said the skills students acquired from this course will assist them in gaining employment or undertaking further training.

“This course is a stepping stone to gaining employment in the aged care industry,” Mr Rogers said. “The employment does not have to be in the aged care nursing section, it may also be in the hospitality section. The course has a lot of built-in help with numeracy and literacy.”

Mr Rogers said the course had been run successfully through TAFE in the past.

“We have had great success in the past with many people gaining employment,” Mr Rogers said.

“The course offers people a bite-size, attainable piece of aged care education and is perfect for somebody who may not be ready for more extensive full-time study. Half the course will be conducted in a Tweed Heads aged care facility so the students get real life experience.”

The course will cover units including working effectively with older people, applying first aid, using intercultural communication skills and applying skills to read English script.

The introduction to aged care course is exempt from the TAFE NSW fee. To register for the course contact Kingscliff TAFE campus on 02 6674 7278.
