Residents say a water playground at Jack Evans Harbour has ‘so much potential’

We asked readers what they thought of plans for a water park that were scrapped at the latest council meeting.

Tweed residents have commented strongly in favour of a new playground at Jack Evans Harbour to include a water park.

The redeveloped Goorimahbah - Place of Stories Inclusive Park and Playspace is proposed to include slides, flying foxes, swings, climbing nets, a sandpit and more play equipment.

However councillors voted in favour of not including a proposed water play area at their April 15 meeting.

We asked readers on social media if they thought the new playground at the harbour should include a water play area and overwhelmingly the answer was ‘yes’.

There were 304 votes in favour of the water play area and only four against it.

Jenny Boyle was in favour of the water park.

“Some of the best council parks have water based play zones,” she said.

Michelle Davis said the park had “so much potential”.

”It’s a huge park that is not used for much,” she said.

“Leave a good amount of space for the doggies and their walks, but has so much potential for a bit more fun stuff for kids and families.”

Lee Perkins Leaupepe did have some concerns about the proposal.

“Depends how hygienic it will be with the water,” she said.

“After seeing that big one in Sydney I don‘t know... but on the other hand the kids would love it.”

The concept reminded Leanne McLean of what the park was previously like.

“As an adult I loved the waterslide that was there at Jack Evans Boat Harbour it was always full when I took my son. A shame they pulled it down,” she said.

“So of course the children would love a water play section at the park especially during the hot summer months. Plenty of shade also to accommodate please.”

Sarah Radford liked the idea but was conflicted.

“I also love that because it’s so undeveloped no one goes there except locals and we have the place to ourselves,” she said.

“My boy loves the concrete and rock pools.”
